Into the maik

Shirley M. Wilke

She was busy being a dancer, a teacher, a mother, an editor, a friend, a helper and an endless traveler. Her curiosity took her all over the world – from being a student in Salzburg to working with medieval manuscripts in Italy to researching elephants in Kenya.

Ruth Litman

This is a photo of my grandmother Ruth Litman, taken right before she left Germany for New York City to escape the War in 1938. The family story is that she and her husband Leon were granted a last minute visa to the United States because the man who was working at the embassy thought she was very beautiful.

W.E. "Bill" Robertson

I love the familiar expression on my dad's gorgeous face in this photograph. It says, "How did I get here exactly?" It's the same expression he often had while sharing a disorienting household with my flamboyant mom, three feisty daughters, countless dogs, birds, fish, guinea pigs and the occasional caterpillar.

George Pillsbury

George Pillsbury made a lot of good decisions in his life including joining the Marines, working for his family’s flour business, and running for Minnesota State Senate. Still, if you asked him to name the smartest decision he made in 91 years, he wouldn’t think twice before answering, “Proposing to Sally Lu Whitney.”

Augusta "Gusty" Buttrill & Beth Buttrill (King)

Gusty & Beth Buttrill were sisters and died within a month or so of each other. The two Texas wildflowers were inseparable and are both utterly irreplaceable.

Eoanna Petropoulacos

Eoanna in her "niata'....the succinct Greek word meaning "prime of life"....
